You have matched with someone on VanDates, you are both within driving distance for a few days, and you want to meet. The usual first date advice assumes you both live in the same town. When you live in a van, things work a little differently: you might only be in the area briefly, the obvious hangout is your home on wheels, and you are probably parked somewhere unfamiliar.
Here are first date ideas that suit life on the road, keep things relaxed and keep you both safe.

1. Coffee in town
The classic for a reason. A busy café is public, short and easy to extend if it is going well, or to wrap up politely if it is not. Choose somewhere with easy parking for a van so neither of you is stressed before you arrive.
2. A popular walk
Most van lifers love the outdoors, so a walk is a natural fit. Pick a well-used coastal path, a country park or a popular hill route, go in daylight, and make sure it is a walk you both feel comfortable with. Walking side by side often makes conversation easier than sitting face to face. End at a café or pub so there is a natural finishing point.
3. A market, gig or local event
Food markets, small festivals, live music nights and local events give you plenty to talk about and take the pressure off filling every silence. They are also a great way to explore a new area together. Van life meetups can work too, though meeting a date at a gathering full of your friends can feel like a lot. Our guide to your first van life meetup covers what those events are like.
4. Save the van tour for later
Showing off your build is tempting, and for van lifers it is a big part of who you are. But inviting someone into your van, or going into theirs, on a first meeting is a big step. Your van is your home and a small, private space. Save cooking dinner together in the van for when you have met a few times and both want to.
Picking the right idea
| Idea | Best when | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee | You want a short first meeting | Easy to arrange at short notice |
| Walk | You both love the outdoors | Choose a busy route in daylight; check the weather |
| Market or event | You want something to do as well as talk | Check times and tickets in advance |
| Dinner in the van | You have met before and both want to | Not for a first date |
Staying safe
- Meet somewhere public and get there under your own steam.
- Tell a friend where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to be back.
- You do not have to share where you are parked overnight until you are comfortable.
- Check you will have phone signal. Ofcom’s mobile coverage checker helps when you are meeting somewhere rural.
- Trust your instincts. It is always fine to leave.

When you are both moving on
Van life dating often comes with a deadline: one of you is heading north tomorrow. That can make a first date feel more intense than it needs to. Be honest about your plans, and if you click, there are plenty of ways to meet again, from planning a route that crosses or travelling in convoy for a few days.
