Van life guide: Scotland
Van Life in Edinburgh: Best Spots, Meetups & Where to Park
Connect with fellow van lifers, plan meetups and convoys, or meet someone who gets the lifestyle in Edinburgh. Edinburgh is a compact capital of volcanic hills, medieval closes and Georgian squares, with beaches and countryside on its doorstep.
The van life scene in Edinburgh
Arthur’s Seat and Calton Hill give panoramic views over the Old Town and the Firth of Forth. The Water of Leith walkway and Portobello beach offer green and coastal escapes inside the city boundary.
When you are staying in Edinburgh, it is simple to make friends when you share a convoy route with people who get the lifestyle.

Start with a brew somewhere public and busy, tell a friend where you are going, and keep your exact pitch to yourself until you trust someone. With VanDates you choose what you are open to, whether that is friendship, convoys or romance, and you only ever show an approximate area.

Best spots in Edinburgh
Favourite places in Edinburgh include Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Dean Village, Calton Hill and Portobello beach.
Ideas to try: a sunrise walk up Arthur’s Seat, a Water of Leith stroll, a seafront walk at Portobello, an evening in the Old Town.
Parking up and staying legal in Edinburgh
Edinburgh has a low emission zone and tight Old Town streets, so larger vehicles can struggle. Use Park and Ride sites or a campsite outside the city, and expect August to be extremely busy.
In Scotland, access rights cover lightweight tent camping in small numbers for two or three nights, but they do not include motor vehicles, so staying overnight in a campervan or motorhome is different. Landowners and councils can restrict where you park, and some areas, such as parts of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, have camping byelaws. Use campsites, motorhome stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
Read the Scottish Outdoor Access Code guide to camping. Please leave no trace, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
