The van life scene in Fort William

Loch Linnhe meets the town, with Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, rising to the south east and Glen Nevis stretching beyond. The Great Glen and the Caledonian Canal run north east, while Glenfinnan and the west coast are close.

If you are based in Fort William, it is simple to make friends when you share a campfire with people who get the lifestyle.

Best spots in Fort William

Favourite stops in Fort William include Ben Nevis and Glen Nevis, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Neptune’s Staircase on the Caledonian Canal, the Nevis Range, Steall Falls and Loch Linnhe.

Ideas to try: a Glen Nevis walk to Steall Falls, a ride on the Jacobite steam train, a Nevis Range cable car trip, an evening beside the loch.

Parking up and staying legal in Fort William

Glen Nevis car parks are busy in summer, and overnight parking there is tightly managed. Use campsites in the glen or town and check signs before you stay.

In Scotland, access rights cover lightweight tent camping in small numbers for two or three nights, but they do not include motor vehicles, so staying overnight in a campervan or motorhome is different. Landowners and councils can restrict where you park, and some areas, such as parts of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, have camping byelaws. Use campsites, motorhome stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Read the Scottish Outdoor Access Code guide to camping. Always leave no trace, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
