The van life scene in Oban

Oban Bay is sheltered by the island of Kerrera, with ferries to Mull, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, Barra and Lismore leaving from the town. Argyll’s forests, sea lochs and hills lie close inland.

If you are parked up in Oban, it is easy to find your crew when you plan a brew with fellow van lifers.

Parking up and staying legal in Oban

Ferry traffic means the waterfront is very busy, and vehicle spaces on ferries should be booked well ahead in summer. Waterfront parking for larger vans is limited, so check signs.

In Scotland, access rights cover lightweight tent camping in small numbers for two or three nights, but they do not include motor vehicles, so staying overnight in a campervan or motorhome is different. Landowners and councils can restrict where you park, and some areas, such as parts of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, have camping byelaws. Use campsites, motorhome stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Read the Scottish Outdoor Access Code guide to camping. Please leave no trace, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
