Van life guide: Wales

Van Life in Powys: Best Spots, Meetups & Where to Park

Meet fellow van lifers, plan campouts and convoys, or meet someone special in Powys. Powys is the largest county in Wales, a land of big hills, reservoirs and some of the quietest valleys in Wales.

The van life scene in Powys

The Cambrian Mountains and the Elan Valley reservoirs sit in the west, with Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in the south and the Montgomeryshire hills to the north. Dark skies make it a favourite for stargazers.

When you are parked up in Powys, it is easy to meet people when you plan a brew with fellow van lifers. See also our Mid Wales guide and the town guides to Brecon and Hay-on-Wye.

Meeting people in Powys

Start with a brew somewhere public and busy, tell a friend where you are going, and keep your exact pitch to yourself until you know someone. With VanDates you choose what you are open to, whether that is friendship, convoys or romance, and you only ever show an approximate area.

Parking up and staying legal in Powys

Elan Valley and mountain roads are narrow and exposed, and lakeside car parks have rules on overnight stays. Use campsites and check signs.

In Wales, wild camping is generally not allowed without the landowner’s permission, and overnight stays on roadsides and in car parks are often restricted by signs or local rules. Use campsites, farm stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Countryside Code, which applies in England and Wales.

Read the Countryside Code. Please take your litter home, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
