Van life guide: England

Van Life in Kent: Best Spots, Meetups & Where to Park

Connect with other van lifers, join meetups and convoys, or meet someone special in Kent. Kent is the Garden of England, a county of orchards, hop gardens, chalk cliffs and a long, varied coastline within easy reach of London and the Channel ports.

The van life scene in Kent

Rolling North Downs, the wooded Weald and the flat marshes of Romney and Dungeness give Kent plenty of variety. The coast runs from the white cliffs at Dover to the sandy bays of Thanet and the wide shingle of Dungeness.

When you are parked up in Kent, it is simple to meet people when you plan a campfire with fellow van lifers.

Meeting people in Kent

Start with a walk somewhere public and busy, let a friend know where you are going, and keep your exact pitch to yourself until you know someone. With VanDates you choose what you are open to, whether that is friendship, convoys or romance, and you only ever show an approximate area.

Best spots in Kent

Top places in Kent include the White Cliffs of Dover, Whitstable harbour, Margate Old Town, Dungeness, Sissinghurst Castle Garden and the Kent Downs.

Things to try: a clifftop walk along the white cliffs, a seafood lunch in Whitstable, a morning on Margate’s beaches, a cycle along the Viking Coastal Trail.

Parking up and staying legal in Kent

Kent’s busy coastal towns and the Dover area often have height barriers and time limits on car parks. Plan ahead with a campsite or a pub stopover, and check signs before you stay overnight.

In England, wild camping is generally not allowed without the landowner’s permission, and overnight stays on roadsides, in car parks and at beauty spots are often restricted by signs, byelaws or council orders. Dartmoor has its own arrangements, so check the national park’s current guidance. Use campsites, Certificated Locations, farm stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Countryside Code.

Read the Countryside Code. Please leave no trace, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
