Van life guide: England
Van Life in Essex: Best Spots, Meetups & Where to Park
Meet other van lifers, join meetups and convoys, or meet someone who gets the lifestyle in Essex. Essex is far more varied than its reputation, with an indented coastline, salt marshes, ancient woodland and historic market towns close to London.
The van life scene in Essex
The coast is a maze of creeks, estuaries and islands, including Mersea Island and the Blackwater Estuary. Epping Forest to the south west and Dedham Vale in the north give green escapes.
When you are staying in Essex, it is easy to make friends when you share a brew with people who get the lifestyle.

Parking up and staying legal in Essex
Mersea Island is reached by a tidal causeway called the Strood that floods on high tides, so check tide times before you cross. Many coastal car parks restrict height and overnight stays.
In England, wild camping is generally not allowed without the landowner’s permission, and overnight stays on roadsides, in car parks and at beauty spots are often restricted by signs, byelaws or council orders. Dartmoor has its own arrangements, so check the national park’s current guidance. Use campsites, Certificated Locations, farm stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Countryside Code.
Read the Countryside Code. Please leave places as you found them, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
