Van life guide: England

Van Life in Oxfordshire: Best Spots, Meetups & Where to Park

Meet fellow van lifers, join campouts and convoys, or meet someone who gets the lifestyle in Oxfordshire. Oxfordshire pairs the dreaming spires of Oxford with the Cotswolds, the Chilterns and the Thames valley.

The van life scene in Oxfordshire

The Thames winds through the county, with the Chiltern Hills in the south east and the Cotswolds to the north west. The Ridgeway runs across the chalk of the downs on the southern edge.

When you are based in Oxfordshire, it is simple to meet people when you plan a convoy route with fellow van lifers. The city of Oxford has its own guide.

Meeting people in Oxfordshire

Start with a brew somewhere public and busy, tell a friend where you are going, and keep your exact pitch to yourself until you know someone. With VanDates you choose what you are open to, whether that is friendship, convoys or romance, and you only ever show an approximate area.

Best spots in Oxfordshire

Must-see places in Oxfordshire include Oxford’s colleges, Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, the Ridgeway, Henley-on-Thames and the Uffington White Horse.

Things to try: a towpath walk on the Thames, a day at Blenheim Palace, a hill walk to the Uffington White Horse, a pub lunch in a Cotswold village.

Parking up and staying legal in Oxfordshire

Oxford is best approached from Park and Ride sites, as city-centre parking is limited. Blenheim Palace and the Cotswold villages can fill quickly, so plan ahead and check overnight rules.

In England, wild camping is generally not allowed without the landowner’s permission, and overnight stays on roadsides, in car parks and at beauty spots are often restricted by signs, byelaws or council orders. Dartmoor has its own arrangements, so check the national park’s current guidance. Use campsites, Certificated Locations, farm stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Countryside Code.

Read the Countryside Code. Please leave places as you found them, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
