Van life guide: England

Van Life in Hampshire: Best Spots, Meetups & Where to Park

Meet other van lifers, join meetups and convoys, or meet someone special in Hampshire. Hampshire pairs the ancient New Forest with the chalk hills of the South Downs, historic Winchester and a busy, boat-filled coast.

The van life scene in Hampshire

The New Forest National Park is heathland and woodland where ponies and cattle roam freely. To the north and east the South Downs National Park rolls over chalk hills, while the Solent coast offers sailing towns, marinas and shingle beaches.

When you are based in Hampshire, it is simple to make friends when you plan a brew with people who get the lifestyle.

Meeting people in Hampshire

Start with a coffee somewhere public and busy, tell a friend where you are going, and keep your exact pitch to yourself until you know someone. With VanDates you choose what you are open to, whether that is friendship, convoys or romance, and you only ever show an approximate area.

Things to try: a walk among the New Forest ponies, a day exploring Winchester, a Solent ferry hop to the Isle of Wight, a hill walk on the South Downs.

Parking up and staying legal in Hampshire

The New Forest has many car parks, but camping is restricted outside licensed campsites, and animals roam free on the roads, so drive slowly. Check National Park Authority and Forestry England notices before you stay overnight.

In England, wild camping is generally not allowed without the landowner’s permission, and overnight stays on roadsides, in car parks and at beauty spots are often restricted by signs, byelaws or council orders. Dartmoor has its own arrangements, so check the national park’s current guidance. Use campsites, Certificated Locations, farm stopovers or pubs that welcome vans, and follow the Countryside Code.

Read the Countryside Code. Please leave no trace, be considerate to residents, and see our Community Guidelines and Safety Tips.
